Satisfying the need for calcium

Cooked and minced bones provide this vital nutrient

Cats need calcium in their diet, for very similar reasons to why humans need calcium. It is a building block of healthy bones and teeth and cannot be produced by the body. While a kitten is growing it needs calcium to build its bones. And even adult cats need calcium to maintain bone density. It also plays an important role in muscle contraction key to healthy heart function.

To ensure your cat has adequate amounts of calcium, it needs to eat food which contains calcium. Unlike some humans, who ingest calcium in milk, the best source of calcium for cats is the bones of the animals they eat. In the wild, they will crunch on the fresh bones of a mouse, chew it and swallow it.

At 3coty® we always want to make cat food which is as close to what cats eat in the wild. However, putting raw bones into our tins could cause problems for older cats, those with fewer teeth due to FORL, and cats just not comfortable with crunching their food. We therefore cook the bones of the chickens, ducks, and rabbits we buy and turn them into a paste. We then add the chicken bone paste to our chicken flavours, the rabbit bone paste to 26. TURKEY + RABBIT etc. This ensures that a monoprotein tin truly contains only ingredients from that protein, reducing the risk of an allergic reaction. We include the calcium your cat needs, without the crunch and reduce our waste at the same time!

Have you checked the calcium content in the analytical constituents on the label of your cat’s favourite flavour?

FORL (Feline odontoclastic resorptive lesion): A painful dental condition in cats where cells called odontoclasts break down and resorb the structure of the tooth. It often leads to weakened teeth, discomfort while eating, and eventually tooth loss.
