When a new cat arrives

The joy of a curious cat settling in

A new cat in your household is always exciting. Longstanding cat owners know that each cat has their own personality. Getting to know exactly how this new person in your house reacts to things around them is a fantastic journey. Realising that this cat is (finally!) a cat that loves the running wheel you bought 5 years ago that has never been used, or learning that this particular cat prefers having their chin rubbed rather than their head.

One of the things that we love about cats is their unconditional love. They choose to love a human, whether that’s the person who feeds them or not. Unlike a dog, they rarely associate affection with food. It does make them harder to train to do tricks of course, but why perform tricks for you human when you can train them to do tricks for you, like get up and open the door!

Experiencing the cat settling into your life and your routines is fun. Alternatively, if having another person in the house makes you change your routines, you find you can learn new habits. The #lifestyleshift into a cat owner will result in lots of interaction and cooperation between you and your new cat. Observing their endless curiosity can be more entertaining than any film or TV show!

You may feel like a couple of equal housemates, however, your decisions are key to helping your new companion live a long and healthy life. Providing enough exercise opportunities and buying healthy cat food lies in your hands. Remember that your cat is an obligate carnivore so their metabolism cannot absorb enough nutrients from vegetables. A complete meat-only diet will help them stay healthy for longer. They may love treats, which are complementary foods, but can only get their full nutritional needs from a complete cat food.
