Bladder stones, also known as uroliths, are a common yet manageable issue in cats. The most frequent type, struvite stones, form when urine becomes too alkaline, often because of stress, diet, or infection. You may notice blood in the urine, more frequent urination, or your cat using places other than the litter box. Once diagnosed, there are two main ways to manage the condition, through a special diet that dissolves the stones or through surgery if the stones are severe. There are also many simple steps that help prevent them from forming again, such as keeping urine pH low and making sure your cat stays well hydrated.
