Identification of feline food allergens

Mono-protein diets can help identify the source of a food allergen in cats

Food allergies in both humans and cats can create significant discomfort. Identifying precisely which of the foodstuffs being eaten is creating the reaction can be a long journey. The reaction will often continue for a while, even when the allergen is no longer being consumed. Testing for items can therefore take some time. Allergen tests for humans can usually speed up the process, however, these are not yet developed for cats.

The only way to reliably identify the cause of a food allergy in a cat is to carry out what is called an elimination diet – eliminating all foods but one. If the reaction ends, other items can be re-introduced until this trial and error approach allows the owner to clearly identify what foods the cat can and cannot eat.

Creating and maintaining an elimination diet raises its own challenges. Many commercial cat foods include a large number of ingredients. Different meats, sometimes grains or vegetables, sometimes fish products, often flavour enhancers and preservatives. Isolating the one ingredient giving rise to the allergy from this large number can be very difficult. Attempts to avoid commercial cat food completely and feeding just chicken from the butcher can result in nutrient deficiencies, creating a new problem even if resolving the first.

3coty® has therefore developed a range of mono-protein flavours of its 100% meat, complete cat food. Like all 3coty® wet cat food, they contain no vegetables, no grains, no soya, no fish, no preservatives and no flavourings. Additionally, the meat in these tins comes from a single protein source. Owners can choose from chicken, turkey, duck or goose. Choosing a meat that the cat has not yet eaten is usually the fastest approach to reducing the immune response. This is why we at 3coty® created the duck and goose products. They are poultry and hence common natural food sources for cats, but they are less common in other commercial cat foods. The ingredients have been carefully balanced between muscle, bone, liver, heart, and other innards to ensure each tin has all the nutrients a cat requires. Organic plant oils enhance the omega fatty acid content and the only nutritional additive is taurine, an amino acid vital for cats’ health.

All 3coty® natural cat food ranges are available for direct purchase from the producer, via online store www.3coty.com, or in selected vet and pet stores.
