Making diet changes with the New Year

Tempted by #Veganuary?

For many people, January is the month to embrace new and healthier habits. The #Veganuary movement supports those who want to try living vegan for the first month of the year. It can be a great choice for humans, as our bodies thrive on a balanced mix of protein, carbohydrates, fat and fibre. Nutritional guidelines across Europe recommend a combination of these food groups for a healthy lifestyle.

The human body needs nutrients from different sources. Just as important, it is equipped to digest a wide range of foods and extract the necessary components. After food leaves the stomach, it passes through a long intestinal tract where nutrients are absorbed. This digestive design evolved to support a life in which food sources were unpredictable and varied.

Choosing to go vegan can be very healthy, provided that the diet includes suitable plant-based protein alternatives to animal products. Our bodies can extract protein from legumes and nuts. There is plenty of helpful advice available to support a healthy vegan lifestyle. In fact, Aggie, one of the founders of 3coty®, has been vegan since 1996.

But cat digestion is very different.

In the wild, cats have only one food source: other animals. Their digestive system did not evolve to handle a varied diet. To this day, they are strict carnivores by design.

A cat’s digestive tract is shorter than that of a human. Not just in absolute terms because they are smaller, but also in proportion. This means food passes through quickly and must be in a form they can efficiently digest.

Plant-based proteins, such as those found in peas or soya, cannot be properly absorbed by a cat’s body. Unlike humans, cats cannot extract what they need from these foods. Replacing meat with beans or other plant sources means they receive far less protein and nutrients with each bite. Instead of helping, plant-based food can harm your cat’s health.

The best way your cat can join you in your #lifestyleshift to a healthier 2022 is by eating a fully meat-based diet. No added soya. No added carbohydrates. No preservatives. No wheat.

“I am proud to be living healthy and I am proud to give my cats #meatonlycatfood.
My #veganuary started in 1996 and never ended.
Join me in 2022 for a healthier lifestyle.”
