Options for travelling when you have cats
Many people like to travel to experience a change in scenery. Having a cat living with you can pose a problem when you want to go on holiday. We asked around the 3coty® team and found out what our team members do, or have done, when they have been away from home.
Boarding cattery
Biscuit, the Snowshoe, loved going to the boarding cattery. The staff knew his inquisitive nature well and adored his bright blue eyes. He visited the boarding cattery every year together with his brother Cookie. Dropped off with a couple of multipacks of their favourite 3coty® foods, they didn’t have to adjust to different foods either.
Cat sitter (our recommendation)
Many cats are attached to their surroundings. This is often the case with cats who go outside. They are used to wandering around the neighbourhood and being in a boarding cattery where they can see and hear many strange cats may make them uncomfortable.
A cat sitter, who comes and lives with the cat in their normal surroundings, can make it easier for the cat. They can also provide the owner with updates while they are away.
For cats that don’t want to take a holiday from their owners, there are other options.
Travelling with the cat
Many people take their cats with them when they travel, whether to a show or on holiday. Some cats are very comfortable in a harness, which can be attached to a seat belt in a car. It can also mean they can explore their new surroundings while on a lead.
Of course, the holiday accommodation needs to be ok with cats. Some hotels and many holiday apartments welcome pets, and it is increasingly easy to find places to stay.
If you are crossing a border, remember to take your cat’s passport and health paperwork with you.
Sharing travelling
Some of our breeder friends split their travelling with their partner. One travels to cat shows with the show cats while their partner stays at home with the other cats. On other occasions, the partner travels while they stay at home with all the cats.
The common feeling
Everyone mentioned that if they were travelling without their cats, they missed them terribly. Some seek out other cats, either in a cat café or just by befriending street cats. One owner we know posts nearly as many pictures of street cats she sees on social media as of her own cats.
Everyone said they missed the snuggling up in bed in the evening or the licking of the face in the morning and looked forward to spending time with their cat again when they got back home.
