Research findings on cat obesity

Some owners can’t tell their cat has a weight problem

The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), a USA-based veterinary organisation dedicated to raising awareness about obesity in companion animals, recently released its annual survey on pet weight and health trends. Unfortunately, the number of cats classified as overweight or obese by the veterinary professionals surveyed increased slightly to 61%. Previously 60% of cats fell into the overweight or obese ranges. Tellingly, the researchers surveyed owners as well as veterinary professionals and found that 28% of owners considered their cats to be of normal weight when their vets considered them overweight or obese.

We have written before about how you as a cat owner can tell whether your cat may be getting a bit too round. This recent survey is a good reminder to take an objective view of your cat’s shape and think about whether it may benefit from a lower calorie intake.

3coty® can help with reducing calorie intake. Often, just the shift to meat-only cat food helps a cat regain normal weight. Reducing carbohydrate intake results in gradual, healthy weight loss. If you remain concerned after the #lifestyleshift to 3coty®, you can explore our lower-calorie options designed to support cats that need weight management.
