Welcoming a cat into your home

How you can help a cat settle into your home

Inviting a new cat to come and live with you is a big step. Whether you have had cats before, currently have one or more cats or it is the first time you are sharing your house with a cat, it will change your life! The first thing we need to be clear about is that no two cats are the same. Things which one cat loves annoy another and not all cats get on with other cats. Sometimes cats stop being able to get on with another cat they have lived with for a while. They all have a personality of their own.

Cats tend to be territory-bound rather than person-bound. This means they can be disoriented when they are moved to a new territory. It is easier for them to adapt to and get to know a smaller space as their new territory. So giving the cat a room to themselves in which they can explore and learn their new surroundings will help them settle into that room. Once you can tell they are relaxed in that room, you can open the door and allow them to explore more of your home. Always with the option of being able to go back to the first, small territory they familiarized themselves with.

Giving your new cat food brands and flavors they have eaten before will give them both something familiar to eat and reduces the risk of any stomach upset from new food causing distress. Even if the food they were eating before is not of the quality you would like to be feeding, it is less stressful to allow them to settle into the new home before making a transition to new food. We have a handy guide on how to make a food transition on our website. If your new cat was eating 3coty® natural cat food in their previous home, just keep feeding them the flavors they know. While they are curled up on your lap, you can read some of our blogs which explain why our food is perfect for your cat.

And finally, spend time with your new housemate. You will have invited them into your home because you want their company so sit and play with them in their single room to keep them interested. Once they have settled throughout your home they will no doubt leave their toys in all sorts of places, whether you like it or not!

When was the last time you welcomed a new cat into your home? How long did they take to settle in?
