Why microchipping helps others return your cat
If you follow our social media, you will know that four cats have now started coming to our factory to eat 3coty® natural wet cat food. We are pretty sure that three of them are feral cats with no home. The fourth is quite friendly so we wonder whether it does have a home but comes to eat our food because it is tastier than what is fed at home.
We are very happy to help these cats live a better life. They remind us though that some cats are lost by their owners. Our team lives in different places, but we have all seen signs up locally of cats which have gone missing. This makes us sad for the owners and for the cats. Someone who puts up signs cares for their pet. A cat that can’t find its way home will be frightened.
A key action any cat owner can take is getting their cat microchipped by their vet. In some countries, like Poland, it is obligatory for owners to get their cats chipped. If you want to travel with your cat, pet passports also require chipping. The microchip uniquely identifies each cat with a registration number in a database. If a cat is found, it should be taken to a vet, who scans the chip and then finds the owner in that database.
We are still trying to get our factory cats comfortable enough with us so that we can pick them up. Once we have been able to do this, we will take them to our vet. If they are someone’s lost cat, we will take them back to their owners. If they are not chipped, we will chip them and they will be officially registered as 3coty® Factory Cats.
Have you had your cat microchipped? It is an easy painless process that can help identify your cat if it is ever lost and found.
Did you know?
In the European Union, microchipping is mandatory for cats travelling between countries, but there is currently no EU-wide law requiring microchipping for cats that stay within their home country. However, the European Commission has proposed new regulations to improve animal welfare and traceability, which may include mandatory microchipping as part of future cat sales. Until then, rules vary by country, and pet owners are encouraged to check local requirements.
