For starters, we have to understand that talking about oils, we are actually talking about fat. Fat is a crucial component of cat’s diet as it is a concentrated source of energy and supplies the essential fatty acids (EFAs) that are not otherwise synthesised. All fatty acids, including the EFAs, serve very important structural functions. They have a huge impact on cell functions, improve palatability, act as a carrying base for fat-soluble vitamins and provide important subtracts for cell processes during all life stages.
There are different sources of fats – storage fat in land and marine animals, and seed plant oils, such hemp, evening primrose or flax. Seed oils contain numerous fatty acids which are beneficial for your cat and are a perfect source of essential Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids in a cat’s diet.
The right ratio of Omega fatty acids is crucial as they are vital for health and wellbeing of cats. Out of Omega-3 the most important are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Both are very strong antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties thus have huge impact on good cell membranes condition. Adult cats require Linoleic Acid (LA, an Omega-6), and Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA, an Omega-3) in their diets. Cats also need arachidonic acid, an Omega-6. Both EPA and DHA are considered essential for kittens.
